Big Pine Key

Big Pine is an unincorporated community of about 5,000 on the island that has the same name. Big Pine Key is home to The Blue Hole, the only freshwater lake in the Florida Keys, which is really an abandoned rock quarry.  It is also known to have the largest population of Key deer, an endangered species, and is therefore home to the National Key Deer Refuge.

If you go across a small concrete bridge, you can reach No Name Key, a much smaller island. Before the Overseas Highway was built, No Name Key was the end site of a car ferry. It was best known for the fact that until a 2013 court decision, the island wasn’t connected to the commercial electric power grid. They are now connected.
